MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
Recognise when and how to respond and encourage people to seek help.
What is Mental Health Support?
Whilst some stress or work difficulty is normal, it’s important to read the warning signs and know when and how to approach someone when things don’t seem quite right. Mental Health Support provides organisations with resources so they are prepared and proactive with providing support.
Why does this matter?
This matters because the earlier we catch a potential issue, the quicker we can address it. The issue has less chance of heading into danger zones of anxiety, depression and even trauma. It helps to build and embed a culture of care.
What does this look like when it's managed well?
It looks like leaders and staff and volunteers are educated about mental health and checking in with each other in appropriate ways.
What does this look like when it's not managed well?
Usually it presents as issues or signs being ignored, or brushed under the carpet. People can be fearful of what people will think, and may not feel safe to reach out. Or people may reach out, and their colleagues or leaders don’t know what to do or say. This can lead to things getting worse. The social sector is one where many people face out to clients and are exposed to difficult feelings. So we need to learn how to encourage each other to seek support in a meaningful way.
